Pitch preparation

Product pitch preparation for retail buyers and TV channels

Last updated: Published by Cydney Mar

Before pitching a consumer product, prepare a final sample, a real cost sheet, confirmed supplier capacity, finished packaging and a short, practiced story.

This checklist is part of Shelf to Screen, published by Cydney Mar, who has pitched and presented products across retail and 800+ hours of live TV. It covers what each channel expects and how to keep your materials focused.

What should I prepare before pitching my product?

Prepare a production-quality sample, your cost and wholesale price, your supplier's capacity and lead time, packaging and one sentence that explains who the product is for. TV pitches also need an on-camera demonstration. If any of these are unknown, finish them before the meeting.

What is pitch preparation?

Pitch preparation is the work of assembling everything a buyer or channel needs to say yes to your product, and practicing how you present it. In the Shelf to Screen guide by Cydney Mar, a good pitch is short, backed by real numbers and built on a product that is already production-ready.

A pitch is not where you discover your costs or your supplier. If those are still open, the pitch is early. The Concept-to-Reality Pathway settles them first.

Prepare fewer, sharper materials

Digital Applied's 2026 product marketing statistics report median sales-enablement asset usage of 22% within 30 days of publish, which means three out of four pieces of launch collateral never reach a rep's screen.

For a founder, the takeaway is simple: one clear sell sheet, one honest cost summary and one well-practiced story beat a folder of materials nobody opens.

Five steps before you pitch

  1. Confirm the product, supplier and cost are final.
  2. Write the one sentence that says who it is for and why they buy.
  3. Build a one-page sell sheet with price, specs and lead time.
  4. Practice out loud, and on camera if you are pitching TV.
  5. Research the buyer or channel so your pitch fits their customer.

Getting experienced feedback

A client of Cydney Mar described their work together this way: "We devised an action plan with a clear path to success. We started with the scope, defined my activities, identified my risks, identified how to gain sponsors, what packaging should look like, staffing, marketing, licensing, testing, and much more."

Common questions

What do retail buyers look for in a new product?

Retail buyers generally look for a product that fits their customer, sells at a price that works for their margin, arrives on time in consistent quality and has packaging that explains itself. Sharon Snider, a fashion buyer who worked with Cydney Mar at Walmart, described her as someone who creates money-making silhouettes to sell in all price ranges.

How do you get a product on a TV shopping channel?

Each shopping channel runs its own vendor submission process, so start with the channel's official vendor page. Channels generally look for a product that can be demonstrated, ships reliably in volume and has a clear price and story. Have production, costing and packaging settled before you apply, which is what the first five steps of Cydney Mar's pathway cover.

Why does so much launch material go unused?

Digital Applied's 2026 product marketing statistics report median sales-enablement asset usage of 22% within 30 days of publishing, meaning three out of four pieces of launch collateral never reach a rep's screen. For founders, the lesson is to prepare fewer, sharper pitch materials that buyers and presenters will actually use.

What are the 5 P's of product marketing?

The 5 P's are usually given as product, price, place, promotion and people. Product is what you make, price is what buyers pay, place is where they buy, promotion is how they hear about it, and people covers both customers and your team. A launch that gets product and price right first makes place and promotion far easier to plan.

What are the 5 keys of marketing?

There is no single standard list. Most versions cover knowing your customer, a clear offer, the right price, the right channel and consistent communication. For a physical product, each key depends on decisions made earlier in development, which is why Cydney Mar's pathway places Product Clarity and Cost & Margins before Launch & Scale.
